I'm listening to the BBC 'World Update' on the radio, and they've been talking about the anniversary of the British abolishing the slave trade.  And they keep saying stuff like 'and they brought the slaves here', 'these are the shackles they used for the slaves', 'these are what they put on the slaves' ankles'...

And I'm wondering, why do they keep referring to them with the dehumanizing term of 'slaves'?  Why not 'captured people', or 'victims', or even 'captives' or 'enslaved people'?  'Slaves' gives the impression of thinking of them as chattel, particularly when its used by whites.
