Meet The Lyons Sims

Posted by [info]deadcal on 2009.11.15 at 03:18
Oh, did you know that in the mathematical field of group theory, the Lyons group Ly is a sporadic simple group of order?

And apparently (so the gossip columns say), Lyons characterized this number as the unique possible order of any finite simple group where the centralizer of some involution is isomorphic to the nontrivial central extension of the alternating group A11 of degree 11 by the cyclic group C2.

Sometimes Wikipedia makes me go cross eyed.

Today, I sent a get well card to my friend. it wasn't until after I got home from posting it did I realise that the stamps I put on the envelope had the phrase "Let's Get Active" on them with drawings of people playing sports. My friend is in a wheelchair. FML

Transformers Rock Theme Live

Posted by [info]deadcal on 2009.11.15 at 01:18
I almost made love to my computer when I saw this.

I also came across a rendition of the Transformers Theme (originally by the biscuit manufacturer J Lyons & Co), that's so bad that it's good, but it's good that it's so bad that it's good again.

I'm pretty sure alcohol may have been applied liberally. Either in pre performance or in the "Dude, we should so do this.." night before

Despite my back being so sore I could barely move, I managed to get a lot of important things done today. To wit:
  • Installed "illuminated switch" in garage/barn. It gets dark in there at night, and finding the light-switch isn't always easy. I bought one of type that glows in the dark (has a little neon light inside) so we can easily find the switch.
  • Installed an "in-use cover" on the electrical outlet on the side of the garage. This special weather-proof cover allows you to have a cord (or cords) plugged in, yet still have a weather-proof cover over the outlet.
  • Installed electric fuel-pump onto slip-tank on truck. This is a 12-Volt pump for the 100-gallon slip-tank on the back of my pickup truck. The slip-tank is full of fuel for the various farm machinery and vehicles; the tractor, the swather, the old grain-trucks, etc.
  • Re-fuelled the 1953 Chevy 3-Ton grain truck, and moved it into the machinery-storage end of the quonset. It took me a while, since it would continuously stall after about 1 minute of running. I think the fuel-system is still pretty gummed up, and at a high RPM it's trying to suck up fuel faster than it can deliver it. At an idle, it will run without a problem.
  • Cleared out part of the downstairs guest-room.
  • Completed the online renewal of our liquor permit for the bowling-alley. With the Christmas-Party season about to hit us, we want to make sure we can legally sell booze!
That about sums it up. That list represents about eight hours worth of work, so it's nice to be able to sit down and relax again. Tomorrow, I'll have to make a trip to Swift Current to get another heated water-bucket for the horses. PoohBear and Dirk's bucket quit working last night, so it had frozen over by morning. I could have sworn I had an extra one, but I also seem to recall taking it out and using it last winter, and I can't seem to find the spare anywhere, so I think it must have been brought into service last year. This is why it's important to have a spare around; When you need it, you need it now, not whenever you can get to the store to get a new one.

I tried going most of the day without taking a pain-killer, but by the time I had completed all the stuff on the above list (except for the online renewal) I was hurting pretty badly. Could be worse, I guess; I called my friend who had gone in for colon-cancer surgery. He got home last night, and he's recovering now. The doctors believe that they got everything, but will have to wait for the lab results to tell for sure. The important thing is that he made it through the surgery itself, now it's a matter of healing and hoping. Somehow my back doesn't seem to hurt so much when I think of what other folks are going through.

One of the best things in the world is washing your hands, discovering there is no towel because you've thrown it in the laundry, and flicking the water onto your dog's unsuspecting back instead. Oh, how he hates that.

Two minutes later, you're all curled up on a nice warm bed, and the dog hops up beside you for a cuddle. In his eagerness to be petted, he wipes that cold wet fur allllll over you until he's dry again, and you're not.

Pow.

I had an excellent time last night! For Tina's birthday, I bought tickets ($15 each!) to the Front Row Center local performance of "Sweeney Todd" at the Pumphouse Theatre.

I've read one less than glowing review of the production, and have to reply that he must have seen a different show than we did. The entire cast was excellent; while it's tempting to just mention the performances of the leads, the supporting cast was just as good. Kirk Heuser was as good a Sweeney as I've seen; he reminded me strongly of George Hearn, who I saw in the 1982 telecasted version PBS with Angela Lansbury. David Hume sent chills up my spine, when as Tobias he goes a little "off" at the end of the show... he does psychopath really really well.

The theatre is a tiny venue, smaller than I expected: but on the plus side, I could have balled up my program, threw it, and bounced it off Sweeney's head *grin* Our seats in section F were better than I expected. Except for not seeing the set of the courtroom and asylum too well (deep back in center stage), we were fine. The upstairs room for "Joanna" was just to the right side and in front of our seats; we were practically in her lap.

Thankfully, there were NO cellphones ringing during the performance! Patrons were warned that such made Sweeney "murderously nasty", and were urged to turn them off *grin*

Archive Open Beta *\0/* News and FAQs

Posted by [info]zooey_glass04 in [info]otw_news on 2009.11.14 at 21:23
We're now eight hours into Open Beta for the Archive of Our Own, and we're really excited to see people signing up and using the Archive. So far, we've seen new 493 accounts created, and our new users have added more than 1500 new works in over 150 fandoms! Our lovely front-end coder and support volunteer Cesy has been tracking our progress with some beautiful graphs: New users and fandoms since Open Beta and New works since Open Beta.

If you have questions about what Open Beta is and how to get an account, please check out our Announcing Open Beta post \0/

Open Beta is still beta, and as such the site still has a few kinks. We really value the feedback that our new users have been giving us, and our lovely Support team are working hard to respond to queries as fast as possible. In order to keep our users informed, we'd like to highlight a few of the more common issues and questions here:

Invitation queue

If you sign up via our invitation queue and have trouble entering your email address, check there aren't any extra spaces before or after it. This has been causing a few problems with our validation - it's a bug that will be fixed very soon.

If you joined the invitation queue and when you check back it says you're not in the queue, then please check your spam for your invitation email. If it hasn't shown up, then submit a support request and we'll get back to you as quickly as possible.

Invitation codes

If you receive an invitation via email, you can just click on the link to get to the sign-up page and your code will be entered automatically.

If you are an existing user of the Archive and you'd like to give a code to a friend, then you need to give them an invitation link, not just the raw code. You can choose to send them an email via 'Invitations' on your user home, and this will happen automatically. If you want to share a code without sending an email, then go to 'Manage invitations' and you'll see an option to 'Copy and use' your existing codes. Click on this to copy the invitations link - it's this that you need to share with people.

Account names

The Archive of Our Own allows you to post under various pseuds. However, these are linked to your account name, and this name will be displayed publicly on the site. Therefore, ensure your user name is one you don't mind other people seeing! Please also take care entering it, as it's difficult to change once it's been created.

We'll be improving the information text on the account creation page shortly to make this clearer - sorry to those of you who were confused.

Problems with special characters

We are experiencing some problems with special characters such as em-dashes (the long 'double hyphen'), umlauts and accents. In some cases, these characters will cause posts or imports to be cut off. If this happens to you, a workaround at present is to use the raw html coding for the special character (see this list of html entities for reference). We're working hard to put in a proper fix as soon as possible. (We hope it won't discourage posting in languages other than English in the meantime - we're excited to see works in Czech, German, French and Spanish already!)

We'll keep updating our Known Issues page on the Archive of Our Own with any further bugs that arise, and you may also find the Archive FAQ helpful. We'll also be posting regular Archive News Posts on the AO3 (mirrored on the OTW News blog and mirrors) to keep everyone up-to-date on new developments.

Despite a few inevitable bugs, Open Beta has been going really well! The shiny AO3 servers (owned by fandom, y'all!) are holding up really well under the vigorous workout they're receiving, and we're totally jazzed to see people using and enjoying the Archive. Thanks so much to everyone who got us here! <3

Today, in a big meeting, my secretary calls me saying that I have an important call waiting. I put the call through. It was my beautician, confirming my appointment to get rid of an ingrown hair. I hurriedly confirm and hang up to see everyone in the room giggling. The speaker phone was on. FML
